Upscaling images has become a regular part of many photographers’ workflows, especially when preparing large prints, client installations, or archival-quality enlargements. While not the only solutions, two of the most popular tools for this, and best in our opinion, are Topaz Photo AI and Topaz Gigapixel AI.

The question is, are they the same when it comes to upscaling? Put another way, if you have Topaz Photo AI you’ve likely wondered if there is a reason to purchase Gigapixel AI, or vice versa. While both tools offer upscaling capabilities, they serve slightly different purposes. This article provides a practical look at when you might choose one over the other… because their upscaling models and quality are not quite the same.

First, a quick note about this type of AI:

While much of the conversation around AI in photography has focused on prompt-based image generation, tools like Topaz Photo AI and Gigapixel AI are a reminder that AI is already deeply integrated into more traditional photographic workflows. These applications use trained machine learning models to analyze, enhance, and upscale images — not generate new content from scratch. It’s a different use of AI, but no less transformative for how photographers prepare their work for clients, print, or exhibition.
