Most photographers aren’t interested in generating fake “photographs” from scratch with prompts. I know we’re not. Our goal is different: we want tools that can edit, enhance, and transform our real photographs while preserving the vision that made us pick up the camera in the first place.

That’s why, if you want to start with only one platform, we recommend Leonardo AI as one of the best all-in-one platforms for photographers.

A Platform Built Around Photographers’ Needs

Leonardo’s tools are designed with real photography in mind, not just text-to-image experiments. Features like PhotoReal V2 for lifelike rendering, the Canvas Editor for selective refinements, and a set of upscalers rank among the best we’ve tested in the image-generator realm, making it clear that this platform respects photographic workflows. That said, while their upscalers are good, we recommend finishing with high-end dedicated tools, such as Topaz Gigapixel or On1 Resize, for large-print work.

Another key advantage is Leonardo’s interface, which is more photographer-friendly than text-only platforms. Instead of relying solely on prompts, you can refine your work with a variety of tools, settings, sliders, masks, and visual adjustments, as well as with multiple reference and style images, depending on the model. These tools feel more familiar to anyone coming from Photoshop, Lightroom, or other conventional photo editing software.

As interesting as all that may be, it’s not the real reason we’ve prepared this guide. Read on…

One Subscription, Many Models

What sets Leonardo apart is that it isn’t limited to its own in-house tools. The platform has licensed and integrated models from other top developers, including those known for their ability to enhance photos while preserving the photographer’s original vision. With a single subscription, you can both explore and create with leading models such as:

  • GPT-5 for subtle, intelligent refinements and compositional balance.

  • Flux.1 Kontext is known for maintaining strong subject integrity and stylistic consistency. Paid subscribers can view an example of that in the video below.

  • Gemini 2.5 Flash (Nano Banana) is the current game-changer in the group. It’s excellent for fast, context-aware, and very near-photo-grade editing. If it weren’t for the low-resolution output, I’d say it’s incredible.

You may also want to read my recent article: BREAKING NEWS! Adobe Photoshop Beta Adds Gemini 2.5 Flash & FLUX.1 Kontext! Another indication of the importance of these new AI models.

With Leonardo AI, you won’t unlock every advanced feature these models offer, which still requires going to the source. Still, you will be able to get acquainted with their most important capabilities without having to juggle (and pay for) multiple subscriptions.

Getting Started

Photographers new to Leonardo will find the process straightforward. If you’re a paid subscriber to AI Photography Training, you can also watch the Getting Started video further below.

  • Sign up for a free account at Leonardo.ai. This lets you test many of the core features with a daily allocation of credits.

  • Upload a photograph as your starting point. You’ll see options for enhancement, palette changes, background adjustments, and upscaling.

  • Explore the Canvas Editor for inpainting/outpainting and selective adjustments.

  • Compare upscalers to determine which one best suits your subject and output needs.

  • Most importantly: Experiment with licensed models (GPT-5, Flux.1 Kontext, Gemini 2.5 Flash) to get a sense of their different strengths.

Why We Think Leonardo AI Is A Good Deal

For photographers, time, money, and focus are everything. Jumping between platforms wastes each. Leonardo AI consolidates the essentials into a single, approachable interface, letting you:

  • Try multiple top-tier models under one roof.

  • Enhance photos while staying true to your vision.

  • Explore many creative transformations and variations without leaving your workflow.

  • Better upscaling than other platforms.
